Application of Short-Range LIDAR in Early Alerting for Low-Level Windshear and Turbulence at Hong Kong International Airport

چکیده
Hong Kong Observatory currently uses a series of meteorological instruments, including long-range LIDAR (light detection and ranging) systems, to provide alerting services of low-level windshear and turbulence forHongKong International Airport. For some events that are smaller in spatial dimensions and are rapidly changing, such as low altitudewindshear and turbulence associatedwith buildings or man-made structures, it would be necessary to involve meteorological instruments that offer greater spatial resolution. Therefore, the Observatory has set up a short-range LIDAR on the roof of the AsiaWorld-Expo during the summers over the past several years, conducting field research on the feasibility of strengthening early alerting for windshear and turbulence over the north runway’s eastern arrival runway (Runway 25RA) and developing an automated early alerting algorithm. This paper takes the pilot reports for Runway 25RA during the 2013 field research as verification samples, using different thresholds for radial wind velocity spatial and temporal changes detected by the short-range LIDAR to calculate the relative operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and analyzes its early alerting performance.

Application of brightness temperature data from a ground-based microwave radiometer to issue low-level windshear alert over Hong Kong International Airport
The use of the microwave radiometer in the alerting of low-level windshear at the Hong Kong International Airport has been discussed in Chan and Lee (2011). This paper extends the previous work by considering all the 14 channels of the microwave radiometer in use in Hong Kong and trying out other proxies of the fluctuations of the brightness temperature of the radiometer apart from variance, na...

In addition to low-level windshear (below 1600 feet), low-level turbulence could also adversely affect arriving/departing aircraft at the airport. Turbulent airflow may occur in clear-air/non-rainy weather conditions, e.g. terrain effect at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) or building’s disruptions at Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) in Japan. Such airflow disturbances cou...

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) introduced a Doppler LIDAR to the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) in 2002, the first LIDAR for aviation alerting services in the world. Since then, HKO has developed a number of weather products based on the LIDAR’s velocity and backscatter power data. LIDAR is found to provide crucial information in a wide variety of aviation applications. This paper give...
متن کاملApplication of a ground-based, multi-channel microwave radiometer to the alerting of low-level windshear at an airport
Low-level windshear, which refers to sustained changes of headwind of 15 knots (7.7 m/s) or more over a distance of several hundred metres to about 4 km, could be hazardous to the aircraft flying close to the ground. This paper presents the preliminary results in the application of a radiometer in the alerting of lowlevel windshear. A ground-based, 14-channel microwave radiometer (7 oxygen chan...

Two Doppler LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) systems have been operated by the Hong Kong Observaotry (HKO) at the Hong Kong International Ai rport (H KIA) for the det ection and alerting of low-level windshear to be encountered by the aircraft. The windshear al erting algorithm is based on the automatic identification of abrupt changes of headwinds along the glide paths of HKIA, which are me...
